UnitedHealthcare and Epic are partnering to improve payer provider collaboration including simplifying the exchange of clinical and cost information - making it easier for health care professionals to serve their patients by delivering enhanced insights at the point of care and improving both the patient and care professional experiences.
Through the partnership, UnitedHealthcare’s Point of Care Assist® will work in concert with Epic’s Payer Platform, a software platform and network of participating health care professionals that makes secure, automated communication between payers and care professionals possible. Benefits of this connection include:
- Automating prior authorization communications to reduce administrative burden for health care professionals and improve the turnaround time of care.
- Enhancing clinical decision support with UnitedHealthcare’s knowledge of individual members and patient populations.
- Simplifying the exchange of clinical and claims information to promote care quality and value.
UnitedHealthcare first introduced its Point of Care Assist solution in 2019, and today it is used by 700,000 health care professionals to help patients make more informed care decisions and lower their out-of-pocket costs. Through the partnership with Epic, UnitedHealthcare will further expand access to Point of Care Assist by providing health systems and health care professionals who use the Epic Payer Platform the ability to receive real time, intelligent and actionable information so they can more quickly identify and close care gaps to better serve their patients and reduce administrative tasks.
Today, health care professionals are already using this capability to:
- Confirm benefit eligibility and potential patient costs in real time at point of care.
- Access a patient’s health history, regardless of where treatment is performed.
- Recommend a clinically equivalent medication which may be more affordable.
- Identify and match high quality care professionals with patient benefit information to optimize both effective care and affordability.
“Together, we are integrating the care experience so that payers and health care professionals can work together to help make health care simpler and more affordable for consumers while at the same time helping to ease the administrative workload for physicians,” said Brian Thompson, CEO of UnitedHealthcare.
“As health care professionals and patients transition to value-based care, automated payer provider collaboration is critical,” said Alan Hutchison, vice president of population health at Epic. “A partnership like this helps care professionals and plans collaborate more effectively to improve quality and reduce cost. Health care professionals receive information from the health plan that’s tailored to their patients, as well as population-level information that can help them manage care gaps and quality.”
